Day 4 – From Vienna to Split: Pizza, Pools, and the Adriatic

We kicked off our morning in Vienna with another delicious breakfast buffet at Hotel Josefshof. The highlight? A very cool machine that made fresh orange juice right in front of us. It was almost too fun not to go back for seconds.

Then it was off to the airport for our short hop over to Split, Croatia. Flying in Europe comes with its own quirks, and we quickly learned one of them: your carry-on bag isn’t just about size, it’s about weight. All three of us were stopped when our carry-ons tipped the scale, which meant some last-minute shuffling and creative repacking. Luckily, since Tina hadn’t checked a bag, we combined forces, redistributed the load, and got everything sorted without too much drama.

Touching down in Split felt like entering a different world—sun, sea, and a relaxed Mediterranean vibe. Our home for the night was the Marvie Hotel, perched with gorgeous views of the Adriatic and boasting a rooftop infinity pool. The rooms were modern and comfy, and we were even gifted basil seeds at check-in (a sweet touch!). Since bringing seeds back to the U.S. isn’t possible, we passed them along to our ship’s captain later in the trip—who had already planted them by the time we said goodbye.

Dinner was a short Uber ride away in the city center, where we stumbled across Pizzeria Sette Sorelle. Now, you don’t usually think “pizza” when you think of Croatia, but this place could change your mind. A simple menu, tasty cocktails, friendly service, and a view that can’t be beat—it checked all the boxes. Honestly, the pizza was so good we joked that maybe this was where it was invented.

After polishing off our meal, we opted for a walk along Split’s waterfront to digest. The evening air was perfect, the sea was calm, and Tina and Tazia even dipped their toes in the water. Tina teased that maybe I should have packed speedos, but I pointed out that the younger crowd was in trunks —so clearly, I was just blending in with the cool kids.

Back at the hotel, we wrapped up the night with swim and a little laundry (okay, mostly Tazia doing laundry) and some early prep for the real adventure that awaited us the next morning.

Split was just a taste of what was to come, but what a great start!
